No Professional Growth: Compared to other facilities, the rate at which you learn new things and receive opportunities is dismal. Whatever they can do to maintain their power, they will. The Animal Care and Training Department is run by individuals who only care about themselves and how they can manipulate their employees into becoming robots with no motivation to progress so there is no threat of them having any responsibility. The other reviews mention playing favorites, but the truth is that I think that makes it sound nicer than it is. Management: Aside from the lack of a living wage, management is at the root of all the problems at this facility. What many of the people who have been doing this for 30+ years fail to realize is, yes, we are very lucky to be there. Level 2 is where you get to apply what you’ve learned hands-on. The majority of level 1 is carrying out facility functions (non training related), and observing training sessions. This was often used to justify a lot of the work done by volunteers and interns. There was also no opportunity wasted to remind us how lucky we were to be at DRC.

Some would make sure you got time to ask questions after sessions, and others would treat you like you didn’t exist. It was also very clear who cared about our growth and who didn’t. Interns could not be a priority with the amount of tasks the staff had to do. I felt for the staff, but this really felt discouraging, as the time we had with them was limited. They did try to give us learning opportunities, but they often felt rushed, or as though the staff were mentally checked out. Unfortunately, the time I had there was very busy for the staff.

Meanwhile, the vast majority of us who carried positive attitudes, the desire to learn, and strong work ethics were left with the message that none of that matters. In a single moment, all of her horrible behavior throughout the internship was reinforced. The staff and coaches were aware of the issues she caused, and she was the only one who earned her whistle in our group. Part of level 2 is working toward earning your whistle, which is a very rewarding thing for interns. In the same breath, they’ll offer a job to someone they met while grocery shopping.

To give an example: There have been instances where management have invited interns to work for free for a year, only to be declined employment. We are expected to “fit in” with the staff if we want any hope of one day joining their team, but are explicitly not supposed to form deep friendships with them.įavoritism runs rampant, and management will only hire people that “fit in” with the other staff. There is a very clear divide between staff and interns. If you’re not naturally extroverted, you will not feel welcome at DRC.
